So he was in the land of “Rocky Top” for a couple of days. Besides being spoiled to the core which will take weeks to reprogram, his summer visit to Tennessee allowed us to do something we haven’t had a chance to do since moving to Paragould. Watch it people. This is a family newspaper.

We decided to go kayaking on the Spring River and check it out to see if it was a float he could do or not. I must say the drive to just north of Hardy was pleasant and the river and surrounding rolling hills were scenic and relaxing.

Our last kayaking trip was at the Big Piney north of Russellville last year, and I remember seeing a man kayaking and fishing and I thought,” Next time, I’m going to do that.”

Since then, we found ourselves in friendly Paragould and just haven’t made time to get to the Spring River for canoeing or kayaking yet.

So we headed that way at about 12:45 last Sunday for a four-hour float. The day before, I decided to buy a new 5-foot ultra-light pole to go with a ultra light reel I already had so I could fish and float. I was excited to angle for Rainbow trout and kayak at the same time. It would also give me something to do when we took a break for lunch and to swim.

The last time we took on some rapids at Big Piney, it turned into a humorous column about how “Crocs” are way too slippery for navigating river rocks. To make a long story short, I vowed to never wear Crocs while kayaking again and the reason was a severely sprained knee and several bone-deep bruises on the backside.

Well, I didn’t make the same mistake twice, but I did discover one to add to the list of what not to do when going to the river to kayak and fish.

Every thing was going according to plan. We found the camp with ease thanks to GPS technology and before you knew it, we were on the shuttle and on our way. Our driver had been in the Spring River all his life, and he was kind enough to answer my questions about where the best spots to fish were. My anticipation was growing. He explained the landscapes I would need to recognize so I could identify the locations he was trying to send me too.

The launch location was guarded by railroad tracks and an ancient tunnel that had plenty of character. Once through the tunnel, we were riverside and ready to launch.

As a spring fed river should be, it was cold but welcoming in mid-90 degree weather.

In the first 20 minutes, I caught two Rainbows in two different portions of the river. I was wading out and fishing the current when I landed the first one and the second was caught while floating in the kayak.

We decided to take a break and grab a sandwich and I took the opportunity to change to a silver and gold Rooster Tail. I then casted to a calm pool and the lure just kept flying into the wilderness.

“Did I not tie that right?” I thought. “Or am I out of .....”

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said out loud.

The rod was brand new but the reel wasn’t. I didn’t check it thoroughly, and I was completely out of line only an hour into our trip. I was furious at myself. One of my dads favorite sayings then came rushing into my mind like the white water rushing in front of me, “Prior planning prevents poor performance.”

I packed light and didn’t include extra fishing line.

After a few mental-heath moments (really several moments), I sucked it up and just kept rowing down the stream. The trip wasn’t completely ruined though. We still had a good time together, however, I was reminded of my error at every bend when floating by other much smarter fisherman.

If you don’t want to float through life watching others catch all the fish then make sure you make a plan and work it. You might also want to make sure you have what you need to go where you want to go. Like enough fishing line to get through the day.

Publisher’s Trivia

Lance Ritter was the first to e-mail last week’s correct answer ” the three options for the highway bypass around Paragould. The rise in popularity of fly fishing in the UK is typified by the hosting, this summer, of the 29th World Fly Fishing Championships in Drymen, in the beautiful Loch Lomond National Park, Scotland. The event promises to attract new fans to the sport and be a massive attraction for passionate fly fishers from across the globe,

As one of the country’s leading stockists of fly fishing equipment and country attire, John Norris has sought to capitalise on this wide-spread recognition by making it cheaper than ever for people to buy. To reflect the buzz of the new fishing season, the retailer has reduced its prices on some of its popular range of fly fishing equipment. In addition a full range of John Norris fishing outfits promises to fulfil the need of every amateur and professional fly fisher. John Norris also stocks all of the leading fly fishing brands including Greys, Orvis, Sage, Hardy, Daiwa and Shakespeare.

Available in store in Penrith and online at http://www.johnnorris.co.uk, items included in the sale range from fly fishing tackle and fly fishing rods to fly fishing clothing such as fishing waders and wellington boots, and game bags. Fly fishing at its most basic may just require a rod, reel, fly line and the fly itself, but those preparing for a long day at the water’s edge need to be equipped with somewhere to store their fly fishing equipment and, above all, against the great British weather. The massive range of fly fishing equipment at John Norris promises to allow fans of the sport to upgrade their supplies, wrap up warm and increase their enjoyment and success as they gear up for another year of fly fishing action.

John Norris is one of the biggest retailers of fishing equipment in the country. Men and women both enjoy it and many participants say that the feeling they get from catching a fish is extraordinary. To be successful at fly fishing, it is necessary to have the proper equipment. One of the most important components of a fly fishing rig is the fishing reel. People who go to a large sporting goods store will be amazed by how many reels are there.

The fly reel is very important because it dictates how much control the fisher will have over the line. The most important thing to take into consideration is matching the reel with the individual fisher’s particular needs and fishing style. The reel must be sized for the line that is to be used. Several models allow the use of multiple line sizes. Also, different types of reels have different spool lengths. Some fly fishing reels provide a full rotation of the reel with just one crank of the handle while others provide more rotations of the spool with one handle turn. Another important factor is the size of the center of the reel, also called the arbor. The size of the arbor is important because it determines how easy it is to reel in a fish once it is caught. Fly fishing reels with larger arbors make it easier to wheel in the catch with fewer rotations. Also, the drag system (resistance placed on the line) is very important and mostly adjustable on most reels. The material used to construct the reel is also worth taking into consideration, since some materials are better for salt water because they are more resistant to corrosion.

To sum up, it is important to carefully choose a fly fishing reel, as a poor reel can frustrate even the most talented fly fisher. People who do not know what to choose should talk to an expert to point them in the right direction.

Fly Fishing Trips provides detailed information about fly fishing trips, fly fishing gear, fly fishing knots and more. It May to seem strange that the things as small as fishing with the fly flies must be maintained, but qu' they make. Many are those which will not fail to take great care of their machine and snuffed Bobine, but neglect their flies. In theory, that n' does not have direction not to take account of your fishing with the fly flies. After all, without a good flight, you n' do not be able to take a good fish. Or, at least, you will have an incredible time to do it. Yes, it is relatively easy with the head of s' to attack with the shop and to buy new flies, but why spend l' is money when it so easy to maintain those which you have already? Moreover, if you to bind your own flies fishes with the fly, you want absolutely to make in qu' kind; they last longer than time qu' it was necessary you to attach them! Here some councils for l' maintenance of your fishing to the fly flies: Before you store your s' fly away, ensure you qu' they are well with dryness. As soon as you finished with a fly, to join it to the fleece patch on your waistcoat fishes with the fly and let dry it with l' air. Earlier it dries, more it will preserve its form, and less it is probable that hook rusts. On the same note, if the fly box is wet, ensure you to remove all the flies of this one quickly.

Once again, you ensure that fishing with the fly and the flies to steal the box are dry before joining together them! You of your store ensure fishes with the fly flies to fly in boxes. These cases to prevent them d' there crushed or tangled up. To avoid a great joke flying in a small compartment. That can crush the fly. Quite simply because you can l' to adapt in it, does not mean qu' it belongs (think that tight pair of jean, you can sometimes pressure on. Quite simply because you can the zip, that does not mean that you must carry them!) If a fly crushed, you can recover it in form by holding it on the vapor d' ebullient water. Once again, before giving it in the box, you ensure qu' it is completely dry. It is particularly important to make so that your flies are dried and stored at the end of the season, especially if you were d' salt water fishing with the fly. Ensure you to rinse the salt of reduction of your flies before storing them.
http://learnmoreon.com/flyfishing

About the Author
http://learnmoreon.com/flyfishing

Fly Fishing Reels Hardy

Fly Fishing Reels Hardy

If you're new to fly fishing I suggest buying a cheap rig at Walmart or some other discount store. This way you can get the feel for fly fishing without incurring large costs.

OK then since your probably new to this i will split it up into the types then the uses then the models i suggest you look at.
arbour/large arbour= good for fly fishing for salmon and steel head as well as tarpon which require lots of backing on them
cassette reels= these have an interchangeable spool like the arbour but only the spool is removed and the handle replaced unlike on an arbour where the spool and handle goes to be replaced by another. Some models hold allot of line and backing others don't, i suggest these for river fishing for brown trout and grayling, they are light and not as big as the arbour reels.
For makes i really like sage, but they can be expensive especially if your just starting out, many of them are in large arbour design only as well. okuma makes a good fly reel that is made from graphite/magnesium that is cheap but efficient at what it does also cabelas has their own brand which can also be reasonable fly reels.
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...

What do you plan to fish for?

Whay line weight are you using?

How much can you afford?

There's really no way of answering this correctly unless you can give some more details.

There are a few tips I can give you though.

Always keep yor out fit balanced - If you have a 6 weight line and a rod made to cast a 6 weight line, you should buy a reel meant to spool a 6 weight line.

Another pointer - The reel is the least important part to your fly fishing outfit (some even suggest that is just a line holder). Get the best fly rod and line you can afford.

Last tip for now - buy an extra spool when you buy your reel. Many times on the water you are going to want to switch from a floating line to a sinking one. Use your extra spool to make the quick switch. Manufacturers are always improving there products. If you don't buy the extra spool soon enough the reel could become obsolete and a spare spool will not be available.

Source(s):

http://www.fly-fishing-for-bass-and-panf...

Way to open a question. If you are fishing Halibut in the Ocean near the shore I recommend a TLD 15 and a Saber Rod.
TLD 15 is $129 and nice rod approx.$180 ish

Or go to West Marine and get a good starter combo of Rod and Reel for under $100.

All you bass guys are laughing at us saltwater guys. I hear a bunch of you going "No way man... Head to Walmart with $30 and get a... "

... edit ...

Ooops I just saw the word "fly" Never mind. Smarter fly fishermen can answer this for you.

Source(s):

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/sto...

pfluger, orvis and okuma all make a quality reel. remember the reel is just a place to store line when you are talking about any thing under a seven weight. the three manufacturers i mentioned make a good quality reel at "reasonable" price. whatever reel you decide on make sure it has a quick change feature and you can get an extra spool (to change from a dry to a sinking line). personally i use an okuma for my two weight, a orvis batenkill for my five weight and whatever someone will lend me for anything bigger. tight lines!!!

Fly Fishing Reels Hardy
